The significant resources this Committee has injected into the world\u2019s most advanced peacetime research and development engine \u2013 the Department of Energy and its 17 world class national laboratories, alongside American institutions of higher education and private sector entrepreneurs \u2013 is catalyzing a new generation of zero emission technologies. This markup is an important first step in the annual appropriations process, and I appreciate the efforts on both sides of the aisle to invest scarce federal dollars in a sensible manner and look forward to the process moving forward.\u201d

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tReliable hydropower is a strong part of the suite of Republican efforts to help deploy clean energy. Last week, U.S. Rep. Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-WA) introduced the Hydropower Clean Energy Future Act<\/span><\/strong><\/a> (H.R.7410), which would expand clean, renewable, reliable, and affordable hydropower production in America and promote the innovation of the next generation of hydroelectric technology.

In the 101, they discuss how modern hydropower, or hydroelectric power, has been utilized for more than 100 years and remains a clean, reliable electricity asset. In 2019, hydropower generated roughly 6.6% of electricity for the United States, and dominates some states’ electricity mixes. \n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cChina has a much different commitment to nuclear proliferation than the United States and Russia uses its nuclear program as an element of its energy diplomacy, which is a pretty aggressive diplomacy as we\u2019ve seen in the way Russia’s used its pipeline network to influence politics in Eastern Europe. Financing the development of nuclear power in a country is the start of a long-term bilateral relationship, including ten years to site, permit and build a reactor which could run up to 80 years before a 10-year decommissioning process. So that\u2019s a century-long commercial relationship that you\u2019re starting up with a country, and that’s a lot of trade, services and bilateral economic leverage.\u201d
