As the grid continues to diversify and additional renewables are added to the mix, energy storage is expected to become the cornerstone for the grid of the future. The idea of grid-scale energy storage technologies typically brings bigger, better batteries to mind – but batteries represent just one piece of the energy storage puzzle. There are three main types of energy storage technologies: chemical, mechanical, and thermal. Despite a diversity of technologies, mechanical energy storage dominates the market.
