\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tRESTARTING THE CLIMATE CONVERSATION WITH INNOVATION<\/h1>\n

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAny real progress on climate change, clean energy and innovation especially in divided government will depend on a politically realistic and technologically inclusive agenda built on pushing zero-carbon and low-carbon technologies around the world.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cAt the end of the day this is a technology challenge,\u201d ClearPath Founder Jay Faison said alongside other business and energy leaders at an innovation event Thursday hosted by the Bipartisan Policy Center<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOne big solution to how to commercialize clean technologies that scale faster, perform better, and are cheaper than higher-polluting alternatives: \u201cGoals, goals and goals.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\u201cIf we have more focus and alignment around resources, we can do more with less,\u201d Jay added.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBut in order to achieve the goals framing a serious climate strategy, there must be recognition of what’s at stake. \u201cYou can\u2019t talk about the problem, it\u2019s kind of hard to set the goals,\u201d Jay said.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tWhat’s changed is that climate change and clean energy is beginning to seep back into the national debate.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOthers on the panel – Southern Company CEO Tom Fanning, Shell Chairman Chris Holliday, American Air Liquide Holdings CEO Michael Graff and Former Aerospace Corporation CEO (and current Chevron board member) Wanda Austin – said those companies have begun to directly link long-term compensation for senior officials to meeting their goals of reducing carbon emissions. \u201cAnd then the organization says, \u2018I guess they\u2019re serious because they\u2019re putting their pay on the line,\u2019\u201d Holliday said. Fanning added that Southern\u2019s decision to start doing that this year \u201cis going to move the ball.\u201d<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tBut he added that existing technologies are \u201cfar short than what we need,\u201d using as an example the \u201cmiracle\u201d directional drilling and hydraulic fracturing has done for shale gas production.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\"\"<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tGoing beyond lithium ion<\/span><\/strong><\/a> for energy storage and batteries and spurring next-generation carbon capture technologies<\/span><\/strong><\/a> are part of the solution, he said. \u201cThis needs to be a moonshot imperative of the United States,\u201d Fanning said.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tJay reminded that last Congress saw incremental but important clean energy wins – including robust and targeted investments, Department of Energy goals for storage and advanced nuclear and fixing the tax code for carbon capture. \u201cWe focus on singles and doubles that build trust and a little bit of muscle tissue to get these things done,\u201d he said. \u201cLet\u2019s have some big conversations but meanwhile let\u2019s don\u2019t forget the singles and doubles that will get us there.\u201d

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tAs a coda to one of the most productive Congresses ever for advanced nuclear, President Trump this week signed into law the bipartisan Nuclear Energy Innovation and Modernization Act<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNEIMA would direct the Nuclear Regulatory Commission to develop a common-sense licensing pathway for advanced reactor concepts that promotes safety without being overly prescriptive. This is part of a broader effort to \u201crightsize\u201d the NRC to match its workload.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tOriginal sponsors include Senate Environment and Public Works Chairman John Barrasso, former EPW Chairman Jim Inhofe, Republicans Mike Crapo, Deb Fischer and Shelley Moore Capito and Democrats Sheldon Whitehouse and Joe Manchin.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tThe final version signed by President Trump also includes language from the bipartisan Nuclear Utilization of Keynote Energy (NUKE) Act led by Reps. Adam Kinzinger (R-Ill.), Mike Doyle (D-Pa.), Bob Latta (R-Ohio) and Gene Green (D-Texas) to update NRC’s fee structure, expedite licensing and examine other potential benefits to the nuclear industry.<\/p>\n

\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIn another advance for next-generation nuclear, NuScale Power announced it has signed a memorandum of understanding<\/span><\/strong><\/a> with the Jordan Atomic Energy Commission to evaluate NuScale\u2019s small modular reactor technology for use in Jordan.
