\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tIdaho National Lab Director Mark Peters broke the news at a Nov. 13 briefing co-hosted by ClearPath and others that GE Hitachi\u2019s General Electric\u2019s PRISM technology has been selected<\/span><\/strong><\/a> to support the lab and the broader Department of Energy\u2019s Versatile Test Reactor program. This is a major step towards developing adequate U.S. supply of advanced nuclear fuels and materials.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPeters, speaking at a briefing focused on Senate Energy and Natural Resources Chairman Lisa Murkowski\u2019s bipartisan Nuclear Energy Leadership Act<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, said \u201cthere\u2019s a lot to like in NELA about what we need to further nuclear energy.\u201d That includes \u201cmoonshot\u201d goals to prioritize action at the Department of Energy and its national labs. \u201cI think we can be much more rigorous about tying concrete goals to our R&D plans,\u201d Peters said.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tPillsbury Law Senior Associate Anne Leidich said NELA is a \u201cgreat first step\u201d in developing adequate domestic supply of the high-assay low-enriched uranium that will be needed to fuel virtually any advanced reactor being designed. But she said more is still needed on the regulatory front. \u201cThere really is no existing capability to produce this fuel,\u201d she said.

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNuScale Power Chief Strategy Officer Chris Colbert outlined how the bill\u2019s initiation of a long-term nuclear power purchase agreement pilot between DOE and utilities could help companies who would follow NuScale\u2019s pioneering work on a U.S. small modular light-water reactor. \u201cWe kind of look at ourselves as a trailblazer as being the oldest new advanced reactor company,\u201d Colbert said. \u201cA number of the things are going to help those folks coming after us.\u201d

\n\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\t\tNuScale, which has a goal to have its first SMR plant operational at INL in 2026, sees power purchase agreements changes in NELA as a \u201ckey derisking element\u201d for others who want to follow in the company\u2019s footsteps, Colbert said.

She added the desire for full Senate confirmation on Baranwal and other nominees by the end of the year.

That fact was underscored by an International Energy Agency outlook<\/span><\/strong><\/a> released this week that detailed how global renewable power growth alone won\u2019t be enough.
