DEFINING THE VALUE OF GRID RESILIENCY     <\/h1>\n\n

Bruce Walker, the Department of Energy\u2019s top electricity official, told the Senate Energy panel Jan. 23 that a \u201cdetailed analysis\u201d of North American power grid resiliency \u201cshould be a top priority\u201d of his office. <\/span>At a hearing on the challenges facing the grid evidenced during the recent winter storms, Walker added that having on-site fuel such as nuclear is important to balance any difficulties from less-firm resources.  <\/span>
\n <\/p>\n\n

\nAndrew Ott, head of regional transmission organization PJM, told the Senate panel that \u201ccertainly, we couldn\u2019t survive without gas \u2026 without coal [and] without nuclear. \u2026 Each of these was online when we needed them.\u201d On a scale of one to 10, Federal Energy Regulatory Commission Chairman Kevin McIntyre rated the risk to the power grid of coal and nuclear plant retirements at a five. \u201cI say that on the basis just of what we know today of the resilience challenges,\u201d he said. <\/span>

\nSix regional transmission organizations have until March to detail to FERC risks to the grid and steps that could be taken and Walker said that would be taken into account with his office\u2019s analysis. <\/span>

WHY WHOLESALE MARKET PRICE REFORM IS STILL NEEDED     <\/h1>\n\n

ClearPath has been pushing for FERC to complete a review of wholesale market price formation given that the current structure is under-compensating all generators, and particularly nuclear that runs 24\/7\/365.
