{"id":37494,"date":"2017-09-21T14:10:08","date_gmt":"2017-09-21T18:10:08","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/saperemarketing.com\/clearpath\/?p=89"},"modified":"2024-02-19T15:33:54","modified_gmt":"2024-02-19T15:33:54","slug":"jay-quick-hit-india-coal-secretary","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/saperemarketing.com\/clearpath\/our-take\/jay-quick-hit-india-coal-secretary\/","title":{"rendered":"My Meeting with India\u2019s Coal Secretary Gives Me Hope"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>I met recently with India\u2019s Secretary of Coal Susheel Kumar after a speech I gave at the International Energy Agency\u2019s Post Combustion Capture Conference in Birmingham. &nbsp;Fascinating. &nbsp;He and his team flew from India for three days to dive into the details of coal carbon capture technology at Southern Company\u2019s National Carbon Capture Center, which ClearPath <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalcarboncapturecenter.com\/\">proudly partners<\/a> with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<aside class=\"float-right\" style=\"text-align: center; padding-right: 20px;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"clearpath-lightbox-img alignnone wp-image-5112 size-full lazyload\" data-src=\"https:\/\/saperemarketing.com\/clearpath\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/67\/2018\/01\/90c71d22a488b3c40c50d05e7916f0d2-india-ccs-02.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"500\" src=\"data:image\/svg+xml;base64,PHN2ZyB3aWR0aD0iMSIgaGVpZ2h0PSIxIiB4bWxucz0iaHR0cDovL3d3dy53My5vcmcvMjAwMC9zdmciPjwvc3ZnPg==\" style=\"--smush-placeholder-width: 400px; --smush-placeholder-aspect-ratio: 400\/500;\"><\/aside>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><span class=\"bold\" style=\"font-size: 16px;\">Here\u2019s why they made the trip:<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Secretary Kumar was formally India\u2019s lead climate negotiator for the Paris Agreement. He thinks about both coal and carbon emission reductions.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>India has a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.anilkakodkar.in\/assignments\/Technology-Vision-2035.pdf\">2035 Technology Vision<\/a> and it has climate adaptation and clean energy technology all through it &#8211; from crop yields, to solar and nuclear, to hydrogen fuel.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They have no intention of shutting down coal and will continue to build it &#8211; at least 300 million Indians still don\u2019t have access to electricity (imagine more than 90% of Americans not having access to power).<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Their plan does call to get 24% of their power from renewables in 2027, and to double their nuclear generation in the next 10 years, aiming for <a href=\"https:\/\/www.world-nuclear.org\/information-library\/country-profiles\/countries-g-n\/india.aspx\">25% nuclear in 2050<\/a>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>They want to explore and consider carbon capture to get more oil out of depleted wells and lower their dependence on foreign oil, which amounts to nearly $300 million worth of imports every day.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>His children work in the US &#8211; one is a doctor and one works in the financial services industry. Small world!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>I found Secretary Kumar an engaging and kind man, with a calm and in-control demeanor about him.
